The Tools Are Changing

February 10th, 2008 Susan

I’m excited to speak at the O’Reilly Tools of Change conference this week on “Dickens Meets the Blackberry: Serialization in the Digital Age.” I’ve had a lot of fun researching and preparing for the talk. At the time of Dickens books cost around 2 weeks of wages for the average worker.  Serialization, i.e. offering books in short installments mostly in magazines and newspapers, for the first time made it possible for books to be read by a broad audience. Although the price of books has gone way down these days, it’s now the cost of our time that’s gone way up. It’s getting ever harder to find the time to sit and enjoy a book – and the idea of starting a big book has become daunting.  Here at DailyLit, we offer digital serialization to fit reading into our crazy lives.  A great case of Back to the Future!
