Band of Sisters launched in time for Memorial Day

May 23rd, 2008 Susan

DailyLit has just launched Band of Sisters: American Women at War in Iraq by Kirsten Holmstedt. This book features twelve stories of American women fighting in Iraq. I was particularly struck by the words of Army Captain Tammy Duckworth who lost both of her legs when the helicopter she was co-piloting was hit by a grenade: “I will always place the mission first. I will never quit. I will never accept defeat. I will never leave a fallen comrade (quoting the Soldier’s Creed/Warrior Ethos)…. These words were a lifeline that helped me survive my injuries and the tedium of day after day of endless pain in the hospital.” She went on to say, “it’s not about being the first female anything. It’s about not wanting to be average.”

Thanks to Chris Evans of Stackpole Books for bringing this book to Dailylit.
