Belatedly, I would like to add "Mama" from "I Remember Mama" - It is a story of love and determination in an immigrant family--great read as a play and wonderful to watch as a movie in which a young Barbara Bel Geddes (later of Dallas TV fame) narrates the story of her Norwegian Mother. Read as a teen, her story inspired me to write about my Mother after she died when I was 23.
Along with Marmee, this parental character "Mama" left a lasting impression.

Of contemporary books, I have to rave about a novel I just read called Atlas of Unknowns by Tania James. It deals with familial loss so beautifully (though this isn't the main focus of the novel) and the character of the mother, Gracie, is pretty unforgettable.
