DailyLit’s Question of the Week: Sexiest Classic Book

Here’s DailyLit’s Question of the Week:

What’s the sexiest classic/public domain book you could imagine someone reading?

Thanks to @pdunwin from Seattle for the suggestion. As he put it: “I hope the answers are more interesting than The Kama Sutra or Lady Chatterly’s Lover.” His answer was Sherlock Holmes stories.

Featured Feature Friday: “Need a break?”

Our DailyLit featured feature of the week is our “Need a break?” feature, perfect for those of you who are planning a get-away or just need a break.

Did you know you can suspend your book installments and have them automatically resume on your return? That way, your installments won’t pile up while you’re away, and you won’t have to worry about remembering to re-start your book when you return.

Here’s how it works:

Each book installment you receive via email contains a link at the bottom that lets you suspend delivery of your book. Just click on it. You can then choose to have your book auto-resume after however many days you select. So if you’re back from the beach in a week’s time, you can have your book automatically resume after 7 days.

Not sure when you’ll be back? Not a problem. You can still suspend your book without auto-resuming. Then, to start reading again, click on the “manage all your settings” link from any previous email. You’ll be brought to a web page where you can resume your book. If you deleted all your past emails, you can just re-subscribe with the same email address for the same book. You’ll receive an email that includes the “manage” link, and you can go from there.

So go ahead, take a break. You deserve it.

Question of the Week: how about we take a book…

This week’s question asks you to invent a fun date by completing this sentence: “how about we take a book….” I was inspired by the newly launched howaboutwe dating site that asks folks to make up a fun date.

You can include your date suggestions here.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Featured Author Friday: Jhumpa Lahiri

It’s Featured Author Friday. Since it’s Jhumpa Lahiri’s birthday over the weekend on July 11th, I thought I’d feature one of the stories from her book, Unaccustomed Earth.

I love this book. And everyone I speak with loves this book. The stories are simply amazing. You can find “Hell-Heaven” on DailyLit (for free) here.

And in case you don’t believe me, check out what others are saying:

“Powerful….Profound….Haunting.”
—Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Ferociously good…acutely observed…These are unforgettable people, their stories unforgettably well told.”
—Elaina Richardson, O, The Oprah Magazine

“Stunning…”
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Happy birthday, Jhumpa — and thanks for giving us the best gift ever!

Ode to Maggie Hilliard

It’s with mixed feelings (pride, sadness, and joy) that I must announce that Maggie Hilliard will be leaving DailyLit next week to become Senior Account Executive at Velocidi.

What can I say about Maggie? That she’s smart, fun, and incredibly hard working? That she’s insightful, loyal and dedicated? She’s all of these – and more. Those of you who have spent time with DailyLit know what a wonderful writer she is and how responsive she’s been if ever you’ve had a question or problem. But what you may not have seen is the work she’s put in behind the scenes – the hours spent on weekends testing new features, the days spent with interns and externs helping them with their projects, and all the times she’s been the backbone of the DailyLit office. We couldn’t have been luckier to have had Maggie work closely with us for almost three years.

I hope you’ll join me in wishing Maggie all the best in her new position. Maggie, we’ll miss you here at DailyLit. Please know that you’ll always have a home here.

Question of the Week #77: Favorite Fictional Characters

This week’s question was inspired by this list of the 100 Best Fictional Characters since 1900.

Who are your favorite fictional characters of all time?

Share yours in our Question of the Week Forum.

Happy 4th of July!

We’re heading out of the office for the long weekend, and we hope you are too. If you need some patriotic inspiration heading in to the holiday, you can check out America’s Greatest Hits, a collection of some of the most important words from our country’s history (from Patrick Henry to Abraham Lincoln).

See you on Tuesday! Until then, enjoy the 4th of July–barbecues, sunshine, fireworks, parades, and more.
