Dog Days at DailyLit

We just got a dog! We went yesterday to a local animal shelter where there he was — the sweetest golden retriever / lab mix ever (at least, that’s what we think he his). We named him Duncan (after a story a friend from college wrote in which the main character, a boy, and his dog were both named Duncan).

So to welcome Duncan this week our Question of the Week asks you to name novels in which dogs (or other animals) play a key or pivotal role in the story. And we’re featuring dog tweets — or should that be treats! — on Twitter this week as well. So please join me in welcoming Duncan to our fold.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

It’s my Mom’s birthday this week. I don’t think she’d appreciate my revealing her age, but suffice to say, it’s a big one.

My Mom is one of these amazing women who was an English Literature professor long before it was common for women — much less mothers — to become full professors. Her specialty is 18th century literature. She wrote several books on James Boswell (Samuel Johnson’s biographer). So, in honor of my Mom, I’m highlighting Boswell’s Life of Johnson on DailyLit.

Happy birthday, Mom!

Courting: DailyLit Style

Happy Valentine’s Day! I thought I’d brighten up your day with this lovely sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,–I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!–and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

From: Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese.

You can send this together with other of Browning's poems (or perhaps Shakespeare’s Sonnets) to your beau/belle’s inbox (with your own personalized note) via DailyLit. Who says you’re not romantic!

DailyLit News: Feb. 2011 – Love in Your Inbox

Here’s the latest news from DailyLit, in case you missed it in your inbox:

NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

Love is in the air this month. I’ve got a creative challenge to describe that “lovin’ feeling”. You can find great love lines on DailyLit’s Twitter stream up until Valentine’s Day. And you can show your romantic selves by sending love poems (with your own lovin’ message). I’d also love your help in taking a short survey which will help me offer books on DailyLit that you’ll, well, love. And finally, I’ve just launched another book by one of our beloved authors, Cory Doctorow.
So cheers, to filling your inbox with love.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, this month’s creative challenge is to describe, in one sentence, that yummy feeling of being in love. Post your description here. Oh, and while you’re in the mood, this week’s Question of the Week is “With whom would you like to spend Valentine’s Day?” It could be a real or fictional character. Post your sweetheart here.
