Double, double toil and trouble…

I thought on this Hallowe’en I’d feature part of the witches’ spell from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

A dark Cave. In the middle, a Caldron Boiling.

[Thunder. Enter the three Witches.]

FIRST WITCH.
Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.

SECOND WITCH.
Thrice; and once the hedge-pig whin’d.

THIRD WITCH.
Harpier cries:–”tis time, ’tis time.

FIRST WITCH.
Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.–
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!

ALL.
Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire, burn; and caldron, bubble.

SECOND WITCH.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing,–
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

ALL.
Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire, burn; and caldron, bubble.

-Excerpt from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Act IV, Scene 1

Getting Ready for Hallowe’en

I’m planning a Hallowe’en party for my kids and 12 of their friends for later today (I don’t know what I was thinking!). In the midst of hanging scary decorations, arranging for them to make candy apples, and making hot dogs look like bloody hands, I’m reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on DailyLit.

To get you in the Hallowe’en spirit (so to speak!), here are some books on DailyLit you might enjoy:
-Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart;
-Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow;
-Bram Stoker’s Dracula;
-Famous Modern Ghost Stories

You can find other scary reads here in DailyLit’s Horror Category.

    Fashion Classics

    Anyone else as clueless as I am about fashion styles? How happy was I when one of our readers, Alexandra Suhner Isenberg, suggested a mini-course on Fashion Classics. In just 10 installments it features stories behind the most legendary fashion items from the polo shirt to the wrap dress. And while you’re thinking about your wardrobe, you can answer this week’s question: what’s the one thing in your closet you’ll never throw away? Enter your closet keeper here.

    MBA Mondays II

    If you enjoyed MBA Mondays, you may now be reading the sequel, MBA Mondays II. It continues the “little business school in your inbox” with daily (or weekly, as you like) lessons from well-known V.C. Fred Wilson. And if you missed the original MBA Mondays series, you can still sign up for it here.

    50 Word Fright

    Get in the Hallowe’en spirit (so to speak!) by composing (or is that de-composing — sorry, couldn’t resist) your own frightful story in exactly 50 words. Check out others creepy tales and enter your own chiller here.

    Inbox Thrills

    Give your inbox a thrill with one of these scary reads:

    -Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow; come on, how many times have you heard about this story and never had a chance to read it — I’m in; how about you?

    -A collection of Edgar Allen Poe’s scary reads that feature The Tell-Tale Heart; The Masque of the Red Death; and The Raven — all in just 7 installments.

    -Famous Modern Ghost Stories — a classic collection with “terrifying tales of revenge beyond the grave” and “touching pieces of love and devotion that know no (earthly) bounds”.

    -Check out our Horror Category as well for our other scary reads.

    In past newsletters I’ve neglected to include a description of DailyLit so in case you’ve forgotten (or want to forward this to a friend — and please do!), here it is:

    DailyLit’s Question of the Week: Closet Keepers

    In honor of DailyLit’s new mini-course, Fashion Classics, this week’s question is: what’s the one thing in your closet you’ll never throw away? You can enter your “closet keeper” here.

    In case you missed the announcement, Fashion Classics features stories behind iconic pieces of fashion. Thanks to DailyLit reader Alexandra Suhner Isenberg of the Searching for Style blog for creating this series and inspiring this week’s question.

    DailyLit Launches Fashion Classics

    I am excited to announce the launch of Fashion Classics on DailyLit. In just 10 installments, this mini-course gives you the stories behind the most legendary fashion items. Given my own fashion sensibility (OK, naiveté), it was a great way for me to learn more about pieces I’ve seen (and even worn) for years.

    The author, Alexandra Suhner Isenberg, has worked for a number of major fashion companies, including Burberry and Sonia Rykiel, and is the voice behind the Searching for Style blog, where she shares her thoughts on all things fashion and design.

    Now, if only my mom didn’t dress me for years in my brothers’ hand-me-down Lacoste polo shirts…
