Characters at Your Thanksgiving Table

Our question this week here at DailyLit is: “Which fictional character would you like to invite to your Thanksgiving dinner?”

I realize we all have characters coming for dinner — but this time, think of fictional ones. You can enter your character here.

And if don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, any formal dinner will do.

DailyLit Launch of The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs

This week DailyLit launched The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs to commemorate a man whom some have called a “visionary” and “the pioneer of the personal computer revolution” (he’s the co-founder, chairman and CEO of Apple). After hearing of his death this past month, I watched a video of his speech at Stanford University’s graduation. I knew then that I wanted to create and launch a series that featured his words, which I found so inspiring.

I hope you’ll enjoy The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs on DailyLit — and if you have a chance, watch his moving graduation speech.

DailyLit Launches The Intellectual Devotional

In case you missed it in yesterday’s newsletter, DailyLit has just launched The Intellectual Devotional on DailyLit. I’ve wanted to launch this series for a number of years, and, thanks to one of the co-authors, David Kidder, I’m thrilled to finally feature this series on DailyLit.

Here’s what the authors say about The Intellectual Devotional:
“Millions of Americans keep bedside books of prayer and meditative reflection — collections of daily passages to stimulate spiritual thought and advancement. The Intellectual Devotional is a secular version of the same — a collection of daily lessons that will inspire and invigorate the reader. Each nugget of wisdom is drawn from one of seven fields of knowledge: History, Literature, Philosophy, Mathematics & Science, Religion, Visual Arts, and Music.” Since these lessons can literally come on a daily basis, DailyLit is a natural format in which to read this series.
We’re launching this series with 100 lessons from The Intellectual Devotional blog, The Devoted Intellect, and plan to launch a number of additional lessons in the coming year.

I hope you’re as excited by the launch of The Intellectual Devotional on DailyLit as I am.

DailyLit News: Series to Feast On

Here’s the latest news from DailyLit (arriving in Inboxes today):

What’s in here:

  • Note from the Founder
  • The Intellectual Devotional
  • The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs
  • Creative Juices for Thanksgiving
  • Note from the Founder

Ever since starting DailyLit, I’ve wanted to launch The Intellectual Devotional on DailyLit. If you’re not familiar with The Intellectual Devotional, it’s a bestselling book which features daily lessons from literature, history, visual arts, philosophy, religion, music, and math/science. Now, after much author-hounding, negotiation and patience, I’m thrilled to announce a DailyLit version.

It was only recently, since the death of Steve Jobs a month or so ago, that I knew I wanted to launch a series to commemorate his extraordinary life by featuring his inspirational, thought-provoking words. I hope you’ll enjoy The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs.

With these new series to feast on, I’m reminded that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. To get you in the mood, I’ve launched a new creative challenge to invent your own imaginative dish for Thanksgiving.

Cheers — to a happy, happy Thanksgiving!

    The Intellectual Devotional

I love the way the author describes The Intellectual Devotional: “Millions of Americans keep bedside books of prayer and meditative reflection — collections of daily passages to stimulate spiritual thought and advancement. The Intellectual Devotional is a secular version of the same — a collection of daily lessons that will inspire and invigorate the reader. Each nugget of wisdom is drawn from one of seven fields of knowledge: History, Literature, Philosophy, Mathematics & Science, Religion, Visual Arts, and Music.” And on DailyLit, the daily lessons can literally come on a daily basis. I’m thrilled to feature The Intellectual Devotional on DailyLit.

    The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs

Ever since the death of Steve Jobs, I knew I wanted to launch this series — The Wisdom of (Steve) Jobs — that features his words on life, design and Apple. Whether or not you believe he was a visionary or charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution (he was the co-founder, chairman and CEO of Apple), his words are moving, inspirational, and sometimes even shocking.

    Creative Juices for Thanksgiving

Since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, this month’s creative challenge is to think up a dish for Thanksgiving (recipe and all if you like). Make it literary, make it funny, make it crazy — it’s up to you. Get your creative juices flowing (so to speak!) and add your dish here.

Polls are Open: Dumbledore vs. Atticus Finch

In honor of Election Day, we asked readers which fictional candidate they’d vote for; here are their nominations:

The favored candidate turns out to be Atticus Finch (from To Kill a Mockingbird) followed by Albus Dumbledore (from Harry Potter) and Zaphod Beeblebrox (from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). Reader ashleykidwell noted: “I would say it’s a tie between Atticus and Dumbledore, but Dumbledore stated plainly that he didn’t trust himself with power. So Finch is clearly the better man for the job.”

And then there were nominations for female characters: Hester Prynne (from The Scarlet Letter); Dagny Taggart (from Atlas Shrugged), and Glinda the good witch (from The Wizard of Oz).

Whom would you vote for? Endorse one of these candidates, find others (including one nomination for Forest Gump!) or add your own here.

Now I need to go vote (I mean really vote).

    Your Worst Nightmare (Fictional) Candidate

In honor of Election Day, this week’s question on DailyLit is: which fictional character would you LEAST want voted into public office? I realize there are lots of non-fictional characters out there running for office, but at least for this question, let’s focus on fictional characters.

So who’s your nightmare fictional candidate? You can enter him/her here.

    Words that Make You Cringe

This summer I asked DailyLit readers which words make them cringe. I thought it might be fun to try them out:

So, it’s time to chillax. Stop being a snit and try to understand the dichotomy I’m facing on my journey. It’s an amazing matrix that speaks volumes.

Oh, you may think it’s mind candy but it was impacted on me. It is what it is.

Gotcha? Fugheddaboudit. Ain’t gonna happen. Time for a vaca. Whatever.

For more words that make our readers cringe — or if there are other words you’d like to add — here’s the list.
