DailyLit Celebrates Earth Day with launch of New Series

In honor of national Earth Day, I’m delighted to announce the launch on DailyLit of Earth Day, Every Day, a collection of personal stories from folks who woke up one day and changed the world, each in his or her own way.

I’m particularly honored that Sharon Rowe, the CEO and founder of Ecobags, has made time to collect and curate these stories. I met Sharon when we both participated in a wonderful workshop of women entrepreneurs put together by Seth Godin (thank you, Seth!) Sharon is that rare combination of being incredibly accomplished and completely down to earth (so to speak!)

This is how Sharon describes DailyLit’s new series, Earth Day, Every Day:

If you’re like me, you’re probably somewhere in between what the media calls “going green” and I call “waking up.” I woke up 21 years ago when I decided to bring my own cloth bags to the store. That started me on a personal journey of a life of less plastic….This is a collection of stories from people who have been inspired to start; to make different choices about how they live, what they buy and what they do for work. If you add it all up you can see that a lot of change is happening and it’s happening all over. My hope is that you will connect and resonate with the stories that I’ve collected and, if inspired, add yours.

In fact, I’ve created a forum on DailyLit where you can add your own stories about the moment you woke up and changed the world.

Happy Earth Day!

DailyLit Launches Urban Waite’s Short Story

I’ve been listening to DailyLit readers who’ve asked for more literary fiction (thanks to those who filled out our survey!) I’m pleased to announce the launch on DailyLit of Urban Waite’s short story, “The Life and Death of Seals”, which I really enjoyed. Here’s a description of the story:

“The Life and Death of Seals” is a story about a family in turmoil, dealing with the ups and downs of love. Two brothers are forced to deal with the complicated relationship between their parents, a rift threatening to tear the entire family apart. It is during the course of one afternoon on a desolate beach that the boys must sort through their complicated memories and find a way to move forward.

You can find this story here on DailyLit. And there’s still time to fill out DailyLit’s survey to make your wishes known.

Spring is about to be Sprung

It’s an amazing day here in New York. I can actually taste spring. And given that spring official starts this Sunday, I thought I’d feature this poem by William Wordsworth, “Lines Written in Early Spring”:

I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.

To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.

Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And ’tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.

The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure:–
But the least motion which they made
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.

The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.

If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature’s holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

DailyLit Launches Happiness Quotations (selected by bestselling Happiness Project author)

Today’s my birthday, and as I blew out the candles on my surprise breakfast treats, I wished for happiness for my family and me. Well, OK, there is my broken laptop that badly needs replacing (hint, hint) but second, absolutely, was happiness. So, with that, I’m launching a month’s worth of Happiness Quotations selected by bestselling writer Gretchen Rubin (of The Happiness Project). I’ve known Gretchen for a couple of years now, and she continues to impress me with her curiosity, intelligence, and, well, with just being a basically lovely person. Here’s what she says: “One of the best ways to boost your happiness is to take the time to think about happiness. This month, you can read a short, thought-provoking quotation about happiness every day.”

So with that, I hope you’ll join me in receiving these daily hand-picked happiness-boosting quotations that you can find on DailyLit here.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

It’s my Mom’s birthday this week. I don’t think she’d appreciate my revealing her age, but suffice to say, it’s a big one.

My Mom is one of these amazing women who was an English Literature professor long before it was common for women — much less mothers — to become full professors. Her specialty is 18th century literature. She wrote several books on James Boswell (Samuel Johnson’s biographer). So, in honor of my Mom, I’m highlighting Boswell’s Life of Johnson on DailyLit.

Happy birthday, Mom!

Courting: DailyLit Style

Happy Valentine’s Day! I thought I’d brighten up your day with this lovely sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,–I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!–and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

From: Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese.

You can send this together with other of Browning's poems (or perhaps Shakespeare’s Sonnets) to your beau/belle’s inbox (with your own personalized note) via DailyLit. Who says you’re not romantic!

DailyLit Launches Video Courses from the Khan Academy

I’m excited to announce the launch of a new series on DailyLit: educational video courses from the Khan Academy. I’ve been a big fan of the Khan Academy for quite a while now. If you’re not familiar with their video courses, they’re all about using video to explain the world. Providing video courses via DailyLit is new for DailyLit; we’ll be sending you (via links) daily or weekly lectures. Given the high quality lectures given by The Khan Academy, I’m convinced it’s worth it. I’m launching this new series with lectures on biology, algebra, and Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. So join me in helping make your inbox a little smarter.

DailyLit Launches MBA Mondays

I am thrilled to announce that DailyLit has just launched MBA Mondays, written by the incomparable Fred Wilson. MBA Mondays combines lessons learned in business school with real-life examples taken from Fred’s experience in the business world.

Fred Wilson is a partner at Union Square Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on disruptive startups. His investments include Twitter, Foursquare, and Etsy. MBA Mondays was originally published every Monday on Fred’s blog, avc.com.

Here’s what Fred writes:

My friend Pravin sent me an email last week after my “How To Calculate A Return On Investment” post. He said: “I wish there was a class that I could take that would teach me how to properly research stocks/companies for investment purposes and how that could be made into a private tutoring business. It’d be for people like me, people who didn’t go to school for business but still are interested in understanding all the jargon, methods of investing, etc and how to apply it to a buy and hold strategy.” Pravin then went on to say that the post I wrote was exactly the kind of thing he was looking for and that he’d like to see me do more of it. So with that preface, I’d like to announce a new series here at AVC. I’m calling it “MBA Mondays”. Every Monday I’ll write a post that is about a topic I learned in business school. I’ll keep it dead simple (many people thought my ROI post last week was too simple). And I’ll try to connect it to some real world experience.

The benefit of reading MBA Mondays via DailyLit is that you can set your schedule to read a lesson every Monday—or whenever you want.

Still, the name MBA Mondays lives on.
