Harlequin titles are up and running! We now have over 100 Harlequin titles up on DailyLit, and there are 20 brand new Harlequin titles every month. Imagine how decadent it would be to read a Harlequin book on your Blackberry or iPhone during your commute or while you’re waiting to pick up the kids. And what a fun, last minute Valentine’s Day gift these books could make: Tycoon’s Valentine Vendetta; His for the Taking; or Expecting his Love Child could end up in your friend’s inbox at the click of a button. Check them out. I think I’ll send my husband one of the Hide this Italian Book for Lovers from Berlitz which teaches romantic phrases in Italian. There’s also one for French and Spanish. You can find them here. Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’m excited to speak at the O’Reilly Tools of Change conference this week on “Dickens Meets the Blackberry: Serialization in the Digital Age.” I’ve had a lot of fun researching and preparing for the talk. At the time of Dickens books cost around 2 weeks of wages for the average worker. Serialization, i.e. offering books in short installments mostly in magazines and newspapers, for the first time made it possible for books to be read by a broad audience. Although the price of books has gone way down these days, it’s now the cost of our time that’s gone way up. It’s getting ever harder to find the time to sit and enjoy a book – and the idea of starting a big book has become daunting. Here at DailyLit, we offer digital serialization to fit reading into our crazy lives. A great case of Back to the Future!

With Thanksgiving over, the hunt for great gifts is on. We are therefore excited to be offering DailyLit gift subscriptions.
Giving the gift of literature has never been easier. You pick the book, the date for sending the gift and a gift message. We do all the rest. Even better, we let you include a short message with every installment. No need to worry about selecting a color, choosing the right size, or buying early for on-time shipping. In fact, with DailyLit your gift can be delivered the
same day (of course you can also pick any date in the future).
DailyLit gift subscriptions are great not just for the holidays, but also birthdays and any other gift giving occasion. As our gift to you, gift subscriptions to our classic titles are free. So, gift away!

In the future, people will have devices they can carry wherever they go. Using the devices they will talk to each other through the air, snap pictures, organize their calendars and maybe, just maybe, even read books.
Oh wait, the future is now! But if you like reading about the future, we’ve just released a whole slew of science fiction titles, from such classics as George Tucker’s A VOYAGE TO THE MOON to David Weber’s IN FURY BORN.

We experienced three separate downtimes in the last 48 hours, all related to power outages at our data center. We apologize for the inconvenience that these have caused for our readers.
Our hosting provider previously had a perfect track record and DailyLit had been available without unscheduled service interruptions. We expect to return to our usual service level shortly.

You can safely ignore this post if you are not using gmail or google reader. It turns out that google is so eager to index the entire web that they use information from RSS feeds and gmail to do so. The Googlebot — the program which “crawls” the web to add pages to google’s index — was accessing pages that were linked to from within our emails and RSS feeds, causing subscriptions to be randomly suspended and resumed. As soon as we discovered this we instructed the Googlebot not to touch these pages. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

We are excited that we can now feature best-selling and/or well-reviewed contemporary titles on DailyLit. These titles are copyrighted, and we charge a fee so that we can pay publishers, authors and ourselves :) Most of these titles have free sample installments so you can first decide whether you like a book — you only pay if you want to continue reading. We are adding a broad range of titles including motherhood (e.g., Smotherhood), humor (e.g., Gullible’s Travels), science fiction (e.g., In Fury Born), war (e.g., From Baghdad with Love), romance (e.g., Heiress) with many more titles to come before the end of the year.
P.S. Not to worry — public domain and creative commons titles will remain free.

We have added books in German, French, Italian and Spanish (ok, technically only one book in Spanish so far, but more to come). If there are other foreign language titles you would like to see on DailyLit, please post in the book request forum or send an email to support.
